Antisemitic Medal - London, 1809
An anti Semitic medal that was issued following the “old price riots”, in which crowds were protesting against the new price of tickets for the Covent Garden theater in London. The theatre hired a group of Jews in an attempt to stop the riots, leading to antisemitic sentiments, as shown in the medal.
The medal portrays the theater director, John Philip Kemble, as Shylock the Jew, to symbolize his greed, alongside writings related to the riots, including: “This is the Jew, which Shakespeare Drew". England, 1809.
Set in a metal bezel. Diameter: approximately 4.5 cm. Fair condition, stains, hole for hanging, wear.
