For reference: Botkin Мikhail Petrovich (1839-1914) is a Russian artist (also considered one of our best draftsmen), engraver, academician of historical painting and an outstanding collector, was born in 1839 in Moscow, in the family of the famous tea merchant P.K. Botkin. From 1856 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under the guidance of the professor Zavyalov and F. Bruni. Then he lived for several years in Germany, France and Italy. Here he became close with many Russian artists, and especially with Alexander Ivanov, whose work he revered all his life, making it one of the areas of his collecting and research activities. In 1880 М.P.Botkin published the book "Аlexander Аndreevich Ivanov: His life and correspondence". The book contains a biography of the artist, there his letters to relatives, friends and acquaintances are published (including letters to N.V. Gogol, V.A. Zhukovsky, K.T. Soldatenkov, N.M. Yazykov, etc.), memoirs different persons about Ivanov, as well as a list of his works. IVANOV Аlexander Аndreevich (1806-1858) is an outstanding painter. He studied as a "free attending" student at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts with his father A.I. Ivanov and in the class of A.E. Egorov. Since 1830, a pensioner of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists in Italy, visited Austria and Germany. In 1831-1858 lived in Rome, visited the cities of Central and Northern Italy, Venice, Naples. In Italy he created the main work of his life - the painting "Christ's Appearance to the People" (1837-1857), considered one of the highest achievements of Russian painting. In 1858, upon Ivanov's return to St. Petersburg, where he spent the last 6 weeks of his life (he lived in the apartment of M.P. Botkin on the 3rd line of Vasilyevsky Island, 8), the painting was exhibited in the Winter Palace, then at the Academy Arts; after his death was bought by Emperor Alexander II.
