Menino Jesus Timoneiro do Mundo, XVI/XVII, marfim
Baby Jesus Helmsman of the World, Sino-Portuguese plaque, 16/17th century, in ivory. The figure of the Child Jesus represented standing on clouds, holds an orb in his right hand and the top of the sail of the vessel in his left hand. All over the plate there are several attributes of the "Arma Christi", Instruments of the Passion of Christ, being, on the side of the boat, seven circular medallions with the chalice, the crown of thorns, the nails, the star, the rooster, the hyssop with sponge and the spear and the scourge. The five wounds of Christ and the torch are represented on the candles. At the stern of the vessel there is a monstrance with nails and the inscription "IHS" drawn with symbols of the Passion of Christ, the stairs, the cross, the crown of thorns and the column. Glued to an exotic carved and pierced wooden frame decorated with floral and plant motifs. Faults, cracks, flaws and defects. Dim. approx. plate: 11 x 6.8 cm.; Dim approx. total: 18 x 13.4 cm.
