Ephraim Moshe Lilien (Lilien) was a painter, photographer and illustrator.
Born in Poland, he received his education at the Academy of Art in Krakow. When he was 21 years old, he immigrated to Munich, Germany, where he became famous thanks to the illustrations he published in various magazines.
His works were characterized by the German Art Nouveau style.
Lelain was a Zionist activist, he joined Boris Schatz in establishing the 'Bezalel' school in Jerusalem and established the foundations of the art nouveau style at its base.
Considered one of the greats of Jewish - Zionist art, who greatly influenced the style of Bezalel artists.
One of his most famous works is the picture of Herzl on the balcony of the Three Kings Hotel, during the Fifth Zionist Congress in Basel.
During his stay in the Middle East and the Land of Israel, he took pictures of the sights of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, from which he later made impressive engravings that received much publicity.
Before us is one of those engravings, in which we see a man in traditional Middle Eastern clothing smoking a hookah.
The engraving is signed in the artist's handwriting and framed in a wooden frame.
