Letter by the Gaon Rabbi Moshe Menachem Yosef Segal, Ra’ava”d of Lodz
Rabbi Moshe Menachem Yosef Segal [b. 1878 and killed in the Holocaust] served as Av Beit Din of Lodz until the Holocaust. He was raised by his father, Rabbi Gavriel, the ga’avad of Śniadowo-Lodz, and also by his grandfather, the gaon R’ Eliyahu Chaim Meizel, Av Beit Din of Lodz. In 1905, he was appointed a dayan and rabbinic instructor in Lodz, and beginning in 1914, he was ra’ava”d of Lodz. He authored books of responsa and halachah (in manuscript). He was a scion of the Ram”a, the “Megaleh Amukot”, the Maharsh”a and R’ Yisrael of Ruzhany. He was unique in his generation in releasing agunot .
