Mikhail Ivanovich Pylyaev (1842-1899) was a Russian writer and journalist who collected entertaining stories and anecdotes from the 18th to the first half of the 19th centuries. He is known as the author of one book, "Old Petersburg" (1887).He studied at the Reformed School in St. Petersburg. His essays and feuilletons about the old days of St. Petersburg were published in "New Time", and they were later published as separate books, one of which was the book "Old Petersburg".

It contains information about the history and life of St. Petersburg from the time of its foundation to the beginning of the 19th century.
The sources for the work were the works of Russian and foreign writers, authentic documents of that time, collected in private and state archives, as well as oral memories of old-timers.
The essays contain a huge amount of useful and fascinating information about the construction of the city, its attractions, the lifestyle of the royal family, nobles, merchants and industrialists, actors, etc.
The author covers virtually all aspects of the life of the city and its citizens: from the daily routine of the sovereign to the "work" of card sharpers.
From the first years of the existence of ancient Rus', the area where St. Petersburg now lies was part of the vast Novgorod region. The chronicler Nestor says that Novgorodians sailed along the Neva to the Varangian Sea, and from there to Rome.
