THE WIZARD OF OZ will celebrate its 84th anniversary of the movie’s release on August 25th, 1939.
And in celebration, we will be holding an auction of WIZARD OF OZ merchandise. These are more modern pieces ranging back to the end of the last century (the majority from the 1980s) and mostly all in original boxes.
While many of you may perhaps scoff that we are presenting this collection from a private collector, remember merchandising of other movies far exceeds the sales of THE WIZARD OF OZ:
5. “Transformers” – $7 Billion
4. “Harry Potter” – $7.3 Billion
3. “Toy Story” – $9 Billion
2. “Cars” – $10 Billion
1. “Star Wars” – $32 Billion
So, with that in mind, you may look like a collecting genius in a few decades from now if these items increase in value – or worst-case scenario, you maybe win some great things that remind you of a happy time that you can always reminisce about.
The auction will be held live online Friday, August 25th, 2023, at 9 pm Eastern time. All items will open at $1 with NO RESERVES. There will be a low 15% buyer’s premium. We pack items in-house and provide discounted worldwide shipping through our partner ShipStation.
What was the real meaning of the movie?
Henry Littlefield claimed that the characters in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz represent figures from the Gilded age. Munchkins are ordinary people oppressed by the witches of the East, banks, and monopolies. The Scarecrow is the farmer, and the Tin man is the industrial worker who has been dehumanized by factory labor.
Some scholars speculate that the story is an allegory for the rise of Populism that was occurring in the 1890s, as well as for the debate over whether to hold on to the gold standard for currency or to begin using silver.
