A GREEK BLACK ON RED PAINTED TERRACOTTA HYDRIA
Late 6th century BCE. 47 cm high. The main register depicts Poseidon in a biga drawn by two white Pegasus horses, with golden wings, welcomed by Thera, Dionysus and Hermes (their names are mentioned). The register on the shoulder depicts Diomedes flanked by Athena and Ares, both driving a quadriga (their names are also mentioned). A register at the bottom depicts 5 youths riding horses. Handle reattached. An exquisite item and in very good condition. Including a Thermoluminescence test. Ex private collection, Old City of Jaffa.
