in French language.
[The history of prostitution was first published in 1851-1852. It was a very bold book for its time. It uses a fairly extensive historical material to study the state of morality, customs and life of many peoples, attitudes towards women and the spread of prostitution in different eras, starting from the middle ages and ending with the new time.
The author studied medieval Chronicles, legislation aimed at restricting prostitution, and the works of travelers. The book describes the immorality of the highest authorities and the middle classes. It tells how gradually the process of legalizing prostitution was going on in Italy, and the city authorities took over the function of controlling it. The texts of statutes regulating prostitution are given. The article deals with erotic literature that appeared in modern times.
A picture of the customs that reigned at the Russian Imperial court in the XIX century is drawn. Of great interest is an essay on the level of morality and the development of prostitution in Russia. The free customs of the Petrine and Catherine eras are reflected. The author believes that the power of female monarchs gave rise to a unique phenomenon in Russia-male prostitution, which provided for the needs of Russian rulers. Russian princesses and Queens paid handsomely for the intimate services of their favorites.]
