Satisfactory condition: the binding is worn, loss of spine; split block on flyleaf; pollution of the pages on the bottom right corner; printing on multiple pages: "3 the district police, the owner of the house I. L. Capshew, Volsk, street Poor, 246"; owner's inscription on back of title strange syllable; owner's notes in the margins with references to specific pages; split unit for the nachsatz, marks bookstore; around the block - the traces of moisture at the corners, temporary spots.

Second edition, updated and corrected.

[The book of Professor of history A. K. Borozdin is dedicated to one of the most outstanding personalities of the XVII century, and, perhaps, the entire Russian history, the brightest leader of the old believer movement, a brilliant writer and preacher. Protopop Avvakum stood out from all the teachers of the old believers not only by his conviction and uncompromising criticism of the official Church and authorities, for which he suffered numerous torments and eventually died at the stake, but also by his extremely original mindset and powerful gift of a preacher, whose word is quite understandable to his flock. It is the sermon of Habakkuk that arouses the author's close scientific interest, since it clearly characterizes the mental movement of Russian society in the XVII century, in that transitional era when Peter's transformations were being prepared. The research is historical and literary in nature. A. K. Borozdin studies the personality of Avvakum and the history of the ideological struggle that the fierce protopop waged with almost everyone, even with his closest associates, through the prism of Avvakum's writings, attracting a lot of other literary and historical sources in addition. The scientist reveals the fate of one person in a very broad cultural and historical context. In some cases, the researcher identifies literary sources of certain thoughts, statements, and sermons of the protopop, which allows us to draw conclusions about the high book education of the latter. A. K. Borozdin's work is a classic study of the history of the early period of the old believers and the history of culture and mentality of the XVII century. The conclusions made in it still have scientific significance. The research includes the publication of works by Archpriest Avvakum and documents important for studying his fate and creativity.]
