Nikolai Semyonovich Samokish is an outstanding battle artist who worked in the field of animalistic genre and book graphics. Academician (1890) and full member of the Imperial Academy of arts (1913), honored artist of the RSFSR (1937), winner of the second-degree Stalin prize (1941). Among his most famous works are illustrations and artistic design of N. I. Kutepov's essays "Grand Ducal, Royal and Imperial hunting in Russia" in 4 volumes (1896-1911).

From 1885 to 1888, G. N. S. Samokish improved in Paris under the guidance of the famous batalist Edouard Detaille. In 1885, for his thesis "Russian cavalry returns after an attack on the enemy at Austerlitz in 1805", he received a Large Gold medal and the title of class artist of the 1st degree. In 1890, he was awarded the title of academician for his work "Herd of Oryol trotting Queens" (Novo-Tomnikovsky stud farm in Tambov province). Horses occupy a special place in the work of Samokish. So wrote N. S. Samokish to his pupil: "Your love for horses and cavalry resonates with me, as I love it both as an artist and as a former cavalryman (in the Japanese war). I still work in this direction, I consider the horse a noble and beautiful creature and try to portray it not only from the outside, but also to convey its psyche, its impulse, which is the most beautiful thing in a horse, even a nag at a gallop is beautiful and picturesque."
