Russian Russian teacher and historian of Russian literature, Professor Alexey Dmitrievich Galakhov (January 1 [13], 1807, Sapozhok, Ryazan province — November 14 [26], 1892, Saint Petersburg). Privy councillor.

He studied at the Sapozhkovsky district school, then at the Ryazan gymnasium, where he graduated as the first student in 1822; then, in 1826, at the physics and mathematics Department of the Imperial Moscow University. In 1827, he joined the Moscow censorship Committee; in 1832, he began teaching Russian language and literature at the Alexander school (from 1837), at the Nikolaev Orphan Institute (from 1839), and others. Since the mid-30s, he has been a critic and researcher of Russian literature of the XVIII-early XIX centuries. In 1856, he moved to Saint Petersburg, where he joined the Department of Russian literature at the General staff Academy, which he headed until the end of his life. From 1865 to 1882, he was a Professor of Russian literature at the St. Petersburg historical and philological Institute. From June 10, 1863-member of the Scientific Committee of the Ministry of national education; from 1867-member of the society of lovers of Russian literature; from 1868 — corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences. From December 25, 1867, he was a full state Councilor.

Russian Russian history, physics and chemistry "By I. A. dvigubsky, and later — scientific and literary articles in the" Moscow Telegraph "and" Son of the Fatherland "by N. A. Polevoy, " Telescope", " Moscow Bulletin "by M. p. Pogodin, " Literary newspaper", " Literary addition To the Russian invalid", " Athenaeum "by E. F. Korsh, " St. Petersburg Vedomosti "by A. A. Kraevsky and V. F. Korsh, " Sovremennik", " Russian starin", " Vestnik Evropy", " Russian stage", in" philological notes "by A. A. Khovansky and others. Galakhov was closest to the "Fatherland notes" of A. A. Kraevsky, in which he worked from 1839 to 1856. In Otechestvennye Zapiski, he published over 900 articles and reviews, including the novel "Basurman" by I. I. Lazhechnikov (1839), the book by M. p. Pogodin " a Year in foreign lands "(1844), and the writings of V.Hugo (1841), on the poetry of E. A. Baratynsky (1844) and D. V. Davydov (1849), published "a Letter to N. V. Gogol about the Preface to the 2nd edition of Dead souls "(1847) and the article" Russian literature in 1847". Some of his articles are signed with the pseudonym "one Hundred and one".

Galakhov's fame is mainly based on his teaching manuals on the history of Russian literature, which were extremely popular in the second half of the XIX century.

More popular than others was his "Russian anthology", which from 1842 to 1910 withstood 33 editions. Already at the beginning of the XX century, it lost its significance and was considered an ordinary phenomenon (moreover, of a specially pedagogical nature); but at one time it was a literary event, because it introduced such "new" writers as Lermontov, Gogol, and Turgenev into school life. Russian Russian Russian literature textbook for children — 6 editions, Historical Russian literature textbook of the new period of Russian literature — 16 editions, and Textbook of the history of Russian literature — 15 editions.

Russian Russian literature History, ancient and new (1863-1875, 3rd edition in 1894) was a valuable contribution to the scientific development of the history of Russian literature, but not in all its parts-the author was a follower of "aesthetic" criticism. Being best acquainted with the literature of the XVIII and first half of the XIX centuries, regarding these epochs, halakhov is considered one of the most authoritative researchers of his time. When the first edition of Galakhov's work (1863) was submitted for the Uvar prize, N. S. Tikhonravov (one of the most important representatives of the Russian historical and cultural school) presented so many additions in his report that in the second edition (1880) the author refused to independently develop a number of sections devoted to the ancient history of Russian writing, and engaged A. N. Veselovsky, A. I. Kirpichnikov, O. F. Miller and P. O. Morozov.]
