A unique historical collection of envelopes sent to and from the Jewish prisoners in the British detention camps
An unusual collection, the like of which has never been seen in auctions, of envelopes sent to and from the Jewish prisoners in the British detention camps. Among others, there are letters to and from prisoners of the secret police in Jerusalem, from the women's camp in Bethlehem, the camps in Kenya, Sudan and Atlit. These camps held resistance fighters and illegal immigrants.
The collection includes, among others, envelopes from the legendary fighter Yehoshua Cohen when he was held in prison. When the British murdered the commander of the Lechi Group Avraham Stern (Yair) and arrested and exiled the heads of the organization, the organization was almost destroyed. Yehoshua Cohen succeeded in escaping from prison. He hid in orchards, ate oranges and restored the organization. After the establishment of the State, Prime-Minister Ben Gurion appointed him to be his assistant.
Additional envelopes: from Y. Gurion, a Lechi member, author and journalist; an envelope sent to Hans Beit, Henrietta Szold's famous assistant; an envelope from a prisoner of the women's camp in Bethlehem to the lawyer Asher Levitzky, who was known for his treatment of members of the underground organizations; a loving postcard from parents to their illegal immigrant son in Atlit camp during World War II; an envelope from Beitar Budapest to Atlit; and many more interesting items.
32 envelopes.
Good-Very good condition.
