The weekly satirical magazine of the democratic direction was published in St. Petersburg in 1859-1873. In 1857, a talented satirist and Democrat, close to the editorial office of "Contemporary", N. Stepanov and poet, translator V. Kurochkin had the idea to publish a satirical magazine "spark". At the same time, an official permit was obtained, however, due to lack of money, the release had to wait. The first issue of Iskra was published on January 1, 1859. The publication stated its purpose "practical satire", "denial of false in all its manifestations in life and in art", promising readers "perseverance... in the pursuit of social anomalies." V. Kurochkin was engaged in the literary part of the weekly, and N. Stepanov — artistic. The editors managed to attract the best forces of the then journalism to cooperation. In "Spark" was attended by poets D. Minayev, P. I. Weinberg, I. V. Bogdanov, N. S. Kurochkin, N. L. Loman, V. P. Burenin, G. N. Zhulev, P. V., Schumacher, L. I. Palmin, A. M. Zhemchuzhnikov, Kozma Prutkov, L. A. Mei, Al. K. Tolstoy, A. N. Pleshcheyev, V. R. Sigles, writers N. B. assumption and GL. Uspensky, A. I. Levitov, F. M. Reshetnikov, P. I. Yakushkin, N. N. Zlatovratski, S. N. Fedorov, publicists G. Z. Eliseev, M. M. Stepanovski, N. A. Damert, I. I. Dmitriev, and many others. With a "Spark" worked such famous artists of the time, as A. N. Bardelli, A. Volkov, K. Danilov, N. V. Ievlev, M. O. Mikeshin, M. S. Znamenskii, E. T. comer, D. V. Labunska, S. A. Lovers, A.V. Bogdanov, etc., the Authors revealed the abuse of power, bribery, embezzlement, unfair trial. The nerve of the magazine was the journalistic Department "We write." Trying to escape from the preliminary censorship, since 1870 g-l refused illustrations. In 1871 Schumacher P. V. stopped cooperation with the magazine "Iskra". He experienced financial difficulties, divorced his wife and moved to St. Petersburg, where he published his first book of poems. The book was arrested in the printing house, and Schumacher was brought to trial under articles 1001 (cynicism) and 1045 (political attacks against the existing system). The case of the book passed to the Trial chamber, which determined that Schumacher personal penalty not to expose, but his book to destroy without a trace. In No. 24 discovered the poem "Meditation" by P. V. Schumacher (signed "P. sh."; p. 791).
