Based on a series of letters written by Mr. Oliphant, we are provided with an intimate glance into daily goings-on including a trip on the first Palestine Railway, festival celebrations by Sephardim in Tiberias, and the Holy Places in the Galilee. A British diplomat, adventurer, explorer, and inveterate world-traveler, Oliphant was the most important Christian figure of his time supporting the idea of the Jewish return to Zion. He ultimately settled in Haifa. His personal secretary was the poet Naphtali H. Imber, author of HaTikvah.
