All the articles included in the book were already in print. "Essay on the history of Polish literature" was written in 1864 for the "Review of the history of Slavic literature", which was conceived in collaboration with A. N. Pypin, and was met with great favor by both Russian and Polish press bodies. "A view of Russian literature at the end of 1858" is translated by the author from his own article published in the magazine "Slowo", which, according to its founders, was supposed to promote the convergence of two literatures, so alien to each other. In an article about St. Petersburg University, the author tried to restore, from personal recollections, as an eyewitness, the sad catastrophe of 1861, an event of course very small in the General course of public life, but not devoid of interest, not only for all who visited the "alma mater", but also for all who are interested in the conditions and fate of higher education in Russia.

Although the "Modern history of Austria" was written by V. Spasovich mainly on Springer, but the author decided to include it in the publication because Springer's work has not been translated into Russian. Of the many articles written in 1864 and 1865 for the St. Petersburg Vedomosti, the author chose only those that have, in his opinion, an enduring literary or legal interest. In the same way, out of several hundred speeches delivered by the author during his nearly six-year practice as a lawyer, he chose only eight, in cases that have already been resolved and are quite finished with the proceedings.
