Juan de la Abadía. Huesca. Last quarter of the 15th century.
.
Artist documented in the Huesca area from 1470 to 1498.
"The Resurrection".
Tempera painting on wood.
This panel was part of a reredos dedicated to the Seven Joys of the Virgin. The scene narrates the moment of Christ’s Resurrection, showing Him standing on the open tomb in the presence of three soldiers. In the middle distance is a wicker fence and a landscape of mounds with a walled city, Jerusalem, in the distance. As the Arte Bernat gallery catalogue entry states, on page ¿¿¿ where this painting is reproduced: “Generically this artwork is assigned to the Aragon painting of Zaragoza and Huesca between 1460 – 1490, and forms a part of the group which has been denominated 'linked to or dependent on Jaume Huguet'. Specifically, it is directly related to some paintings by Juan de Abadía (¿ - 1498), to which it is linked not only by the typology of the faces and the intense chiaroscuro modelling of the musculature, but also by the concept of anatomy of Christ’s torso, with marked pectoral and abdominal musculature, as well as around the hips, which is not close to what we see in paintings by Martín de Soria, and situates this panel in the context of the Saint Catherine reredos in the Magdalene Church in Huesca, or the Saint Quiteria altarpiece in the Alquézar Parish Church, in the Colegiata Museum, among others.”
