"The Fire at the Borgo", Italian school of the 17th century, large and important oil on canvas
Oil on canvas, canvas measures: 96 x 77 cm. Framed measurements: 121 x 102 cm. We find ourselves before a sublime representation in oil on canvas of the miracle attributed to Pope Leo IV in the year 847. A fire had broken out in the city, and the pope put it out by making the sign of the cross from a Vatican window. It would thus exemplify the divine favor obtained through the Pontiff. However, there is no unanimity as to the meaning of the scene. It can refer to the schism that ended with Leo X (historian Pastor), or it can allude to the arrival of peace with Pope Leo X, after the wars of Julius II. Origin: important private collection of the North of Spain.
