We are in front of one of a master work belonging to the New Spanish Baroque school, dated between the end of the end of the 17th century and the beggining of the 18th C, very close to the manner of Juan Rodríguez Juárez, the present work represents an authentic "Tour de Force" in terms of artistic quality and excellent artistic technique, and without a doubt The work of an important master from New Spain, heavily influenced by the Rococo currents that were beginning to arrive from Europe to the New World. Renowned caste painter and portraitist of viceroys, Juan Rodríguez Juárez (Mexico City, July 14, 1675-17281), painter of the Mexican Baroque who lived in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. He belonged to a well-known saga of painters from viceregal Mexico, his style is halfway between chiaroscuro and late baroque or rococo painting. His teacher was José de Padilla and he worked in his workshop. In 1719 he was hired to carry out some of the central pieces of the Altar of the Kings of the Metropolitan Cathedral: the Adoration of the Magi and the Assumption of the Virgin. Also noteworthy are his portraits of Archbishop José de Lanciego and Viceroy Fernando de Alencastre, Duke of Linares. Oil on canvas, measures: 83 x 53 cm. Origin: important Madrid private collection.
