This beautifully designed publication, decorated with many illustrations, is a historical, geographical and ethnographic survey of the Levant world, compiled by a full member of the Academy of Sciences Peter Alekseevich Stenin (1864-1907).

The book tells about the countries of the Middle East. It is divided into three sections, which describe the European, Asian and African parts of the Mediterranean.

Pyotr Alekseyevich Stenin is a geographer and traveler, a full member of the Imperial Geographical society. He described in detail the countries of the Middle East, which were mostly under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in the XIX century. This region was the place where human civilization came from, where the world's largest religions appeared, where powerful States were born that so influenced world culture. The middle East has long been of particular importance to Russia, since many of its economic and political interests were concentrated there. The issue of Straits, access to the Mediterranean sea, and the liberation of the Balkan peoples have long remained strategic for Russia and have led to many international conflicts.
