Pavel Kuznetsov (5 [17] November 1878, Saratov — 21 February 1968, Moscow) was a Russian painter.

Brilliantly passed the entrance exams at the Moscow school of painting, sculpture and architecture in 1897. Studied: first with A. E. Arkhipov, then with K. A. Korovin and V. A. Serov. The study gave a circle of friends and associates, who later formed the artistic Association "Blue rose".

In 1902, he became close to V. ya. Bryusov and the symbolists. Collaborated with symbolist publications: magazines "Art", "Golden fleece", was a member of the Association"World of art".

In 1902, Kuznetsov together with K. S. Petrov-Vodkin and P. S. Utkin painted the Church of the Kazan mother of God in Saratov. Being at the forefront of artistic thought at that time (participating in the activities of the "World of art"), talented young people in the Church tried to take liberties with the canons, which caused an explosion of public indignation and their paintings were destroyed.

In 1904, Kuznetsov was one of the organizers of the exhibition "scarlet rose", and also took an active part in the formation of the art Association" Blue rose", which was finally determined after the exhibition of the same name in 1907.

In 1906, at the invitation of Sergei Diaghilev, he went to Paris, where he visited private art studios and his works took part in an exhibition of Russian art, which resulted in Kuznetsov being elected a member of the Autumn Salon (for life).

He was a member of the associations Mir iskusstva, Union of Russian artists, and Four arts.

During the revolution, he worked with great enthusiasm, took part in the publication of the magazine "Path of liberation", conducted pedagogical work, headed the section of painting in the Department of art Narkompros (1919-1924). He creates new variations of Eastern motifs, which have a noticeable influence of old Russian painting, paints beautiful portraits of his wife E. M. Bebutova (1921-1922), and designs the lithographic series "Turkestan" and "Mountain Bukhara" (1922-1923).

In 1923, on a business trip, Narkompros visited a personal exhibition in Paris (went together with E. M. Bebutova), after which the famous "Paris comedians"appear.

Organizer and Chairman of the art society "Four arts" (1924-1931).

1928-honored artist of the RSFSR.

In 1917-37, 1945-48, he taught at VKhUTEMAS-vkhutein, the Moscow Institute of fine arts and other institutes. For the last three decades of his life, he did not stop working actively, mainly in the genre of landscape and still life. Some of these works are in the collection of the Saratov state art Museum named after A. N. Radishchev.

He died in Moscow on February 21, 1968.
