Ivan Egorovich Zabelin (1820-1908) was an outstanding historian and archaeologist. The scientific path of the scientist was not simple, but thanks to the extraordinary talents of the historian achieved universal recognition. In 1871 he was awarded the degree of honorary doctor of Russian history from the University of St. Vladimir, in 1879 he became Chairman of The society of History and antiquities, in 1884 – a corresponding member, and in 1892 an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences. I. E. Zabelin's researches concern mainly the ancient Kievan epoch and the Moscow period of Russian history. The characteristic features of the scientist's work: faith in the original creative forces of the Russian people and love for the lower class, strong and healthy morally "orphan people", "breadwinner people". When studying the historical process I. E. Zabelin seeks to put forward the people's "common truth".
The works of the historian are characterized by an expressive and original language, unusually colorful and rich, with an archaic, folk tint. Exploring the ideological foundations of Russian culture, he emphasizes the importance of economic relations in the history of politics and culture.Two major topics are devoted to many of the works of the scientist: household history and research on the history of Moscow. An important role is played by I. E. Zabelin's theory of ancestral origin of the Moscow state. The historian sought to find out the "roots and origins" of Russian life, revealed borrowings in culture from neighboring peoples. On the history of Moscow I. E. Zabelin published: "Historical description of the Moscow don monastery", " Kuntsovo and the ancient Setun camp. Historical memories", "Preobrazhenskoye or Preobrazhensk", "Materials for the history, archaeology and statistics of the city of Moscow".
The history of the city of Moscow was written By I. E. Zabelin on behalf of the Moscow city Duma. The scientist was engaged in preparation and writing of work more than 20 years (since 1881). The author set himself the task to highlight all milestones in history and all aspects of everyday life in Moscow. About 15 years took only archival research and publication of materials on the history of Moscow. When structuring and generalizing the accumulated information I. E. Zabelin used several principles: chronological, thematic and local. The unfinished work of the historian is characterized by exceptional detail and accuracy of material transmission, the method of research allows to cover all spheres of Moscow life in its history, the literary talent of the author allows the reader to visualize the history of the city in faces and colors. Until now, the work of I. E. Zabelin remains one of the best in this field.
