Never before has a popular, but also strictly scientific book had such success as Melchior Neumayr's ”history of the earth” (1815-1890)-it is rightfully considered an ornament of European natural history literature. The book is written primarily for the General public who are interested in Geology, but do not have sufficient training in special issues. The geologist will also find in the book several new views and a consistent development of those theories that were previously expressed only in General terms. The book is supplemented with wonderful illustrative material. Some of the chromolithographs are taken from the Works of the geological Committee in Washington, while others are based on Golzel's geographical paintings.
