[Otto Eduard Leopold von Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of zu Lauenburg (German: Otto Eduard Leopold Fürst von Bismarck-Schönhausen, Herzog zu Lauenburg; April 1, 1815, Schönhausen — July 30, 1898, Friedrichsruh) — the first Chancellor of the German Empire, who implemented the plan for the unification of Germany along the small German way. Upon retirement, he received the non-hereditary title of Duke of Lauenburg and the rank of Prussian Colonel-General with the rank of field Marshal. Political Testament of the founder of the German Empire, written, as the dedication says, ” to the sons and grandsons for understanding the past and for teaching the future.” Bismarck began writing his extensive, three-volume memoirs shortly after his forced retirement in 1890.having retired to one of his estates in the Saxon forest, he fought from there against the so-called ”new deal” taken by the young William II and the new Chancellor Caprivi. Filled with anxiety for the fate of the Empire in which he had taken such a large part, resentful of his resignation, discontented and frondant, he devoted the last years of his life to making a political will. Looking back, summing up the results of his long political activity, Bismarck tried not only to justify it to his contemporaries, but also to warn, based on his own political experience, his successors from possible mistakes. And the experience was huge and diverse.]
