Alexander Ilyich Perelman (1916-1998)-Soviet and Russian scientist, soil scientist and geochemist, doctor of geological and mineralogical Sciences (1954), Professor (1967), full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1991). Author of about 250 scientific works, some of which have been translated into foreign languages; the classic textbook ”Geochemistry of landscape”, a number of popular science books on geography, as well as scientific biographies of some outstanding Russian scientists. Born on may 18, 1916 in Moscow in a family of Jewish employees. After graduating from Moscow secondary school No. 6, from 1933 he studied at Moscow University, first at the faculty of labor, then at the faculty of soil and geography. After graduating from the University in 1938, until 1941 he studied at the graduate school of the geographical faculty formed in 1938 with the famous soil scientist V. V. Gemmerling. In 1941, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic ”Experience of energy characteristics of certain chemical weathering reactions”. In 1954, he received his doctorate on the topic ”Accumulation of uranium in fossil and relict soils of Eastern Turkmenistan and Western Uzbekistan”. during the great Patriotic war, Alexander Perelman worked as a military engineer-geologist. After the war, he worked at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR: first at the Geological Institute, then at the Institute of Geology of ore deposits, Mineralogy, petrography and Geochemistry, where he worked until the end of his life. At the same time, he lectured at the faculty of geography of Moscow University: from 1951 to 1971 - at the Department of physical geography of the USSR, from 1972 to 1998-at the Department of Geochemistry of landscapes and soil geography. He lived in Moscow on 111 Vernadsky Avenue. He died on March 7, 1998 in Moscow. He was buried at the Vostryakovsky cemetery.
