[The Russian Capital and Income Insurance Company "Life" is a joint-stock life insurance company that existed in 1835-1919. The first life insurance company in the history of Russia.

In 1834, a Prussian citizen, Ferdinand of Schwedersky, applied to the Ministry of the Interior for the establishment of a joint-stock company in Russia to "insure the lifetime income and monetary capital, with the granting of certain exceptional advantages." This proposal and the draft charter were considered in the State Council, and on its positive conclusion, Emperor Nicholas I imposed on September 4, 1835, the resolution "be therefore". The new joint-stock insurance company was named "Russian Society for the Insurance of Life and Other Fixed Income and Cash Capital".

The company received from the government the exclusive right to life insurance on the territory of the Russian Empire. The monopoly consisted in the fact that for the next 20 years "no other company, either in Russia or in foreign lands" had the right to perform operations permitted by the established company (in fact, the monopoly on life insurance in Russia lasted until 1860). Agents of foreign insurers were prohibited from entering into insurance contracts under the threat of a fine of 20% of the insured amount. The exception was the written refusal of insurance of the company itself. The only tax was a duty of 25 kopecks from 1000 rubles of the insured amount. By 1910, its capital exceeded 40 million rubles.

The charter of the company provided for insurance in four types, or, as it was then called, categories: category A-capital insurance in favor of heirs (insurance in case of death); category B - insurance of pensions in favor of heirs and in case of survival to a certain period (mixed insurance); category C - insurance of pensions in favor of the policyholder (insurance for survival); category D-insurance of capital and pensions in favor of children when they reach a certain age. More than 97% of the contracts were in category A.]
