Noah’s Ark, 1967,
Oil on cardboard laid down on
plywood, 106x129 cm.
Signed and dated.
Provenance: Given as a gift by Yosl Bergner to his close friend, Israel Silman, in 1967.
Bergner is indeed one of the more common Israeli artists, but 1967 was the most important year in his work, the same year in which he created his three most famous paintings. This work, which has never been sold, depicts the story of Noah's Ark, but instead of depicting the story of heroism, Bergner uses animals and typical characters to depict the refugee Jew who is uprooted from his home, who faces disasters and persecution throughout his life, in search of a safe shore.
