בתחילה, דגם הסכין עוצב ופותח עבור הצי האמריקני בשנת 1942 במהלך מלחמת העולם השנייה,
בישראל הסכין נכנסה לשימוש בצה"ל בתחילת שנות ה-50 ומכונה עד ימינו בשם סכין פלסים, שכן הייתה בשימוש חיל ההנדסה הקרבית לאיתור מוקשים.
