Group of (3) Spanish-American War Era Stereographs

Group of (3) Spanish-American War Era Stereographs

A group of (3) printed photograph cards, stereo graph format, all measuring 3.5" x 7".

Littleton, NH, Ca. 1898. The cards were produced by photographer B.W. Kilburn of the Kilburn Brothers studio. Stereoscopic images, or a stereogram, refer to a pair of images that, when viewed with a stereoscope, present a 3D depth to the image. Minor foxing and bumped corners to all, with creasing and tearing to one. Does not affect the image quality. Overall very good condition. The lot includes:

"12750. The Hottest of the Fight, Battle of Manila, May 1st, 1898". Depicts an intense naval scene between American and Spanish battleships. Often referred to as the Mock Battle of Manila due to the manufactured circumstances in which it was fought, the result gave American forces a strategic advantage over the Philippine Revolutionary Army, thus creating conditions for the largest battle in the Philippine-American War in 1899. "12621. Wreck of the Battleship Maine, Havana Harbor". Depicts a scene of the aftermath following the detonation of explosives aboard the American battleship. The sinking of the USS Maine in 1889 became one of the leading contributors to the outbreak of the Spanish-American War after it was reportedly attacked by Spanish forces. As a result, the phrase "Remember the Maine!" was used as a rallying cry for pro-war advocates. “12664. Admiral Schley". A commemorative image depicting rear admiral Winfield Scott Schley (1839-1911), whose tact and leadership during the Battle of Santiago (1898) made him a notable war hero. Benjamin W. Kilbur (1827-1909) is noted as one of the most prolific manufactures of stereoscopic views, documenting such events as the inauguration of Grover Cleveland, the Boer War, the Boxer Rebellion, and the Spanish-American War.
