Egon Hofmann was an Austrian painter, poet, mountaineer, and industrialist. Hofmann came from a wealthy industrial family. He was introduced to art at an early age through his mother, Agathe von Schwabenau, a painter, and his grandfather, an art collector and patron. In 1903, he began studying law at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He then transferred to the University of Vienna and the University of Innsbruck. During his studies, he spent time in Paris, where he visited the Louvre and the Adacémie de la Grande Chaumière. He received his doctorate in law in 1908. In the same year, a student of the Corps Philister since 1903, he co-founded the Upper Austrian Corps Philister Association. Hofmann trained as a painter at the Stuttgart Art Academy and the Dresden Art Academy. He was drafted into the First World War. In 1916, he was represented at the Ernst Arnold Gallery at the "Second Exhibition of Dresden Artists Serving in the Army." After the war, Hofmann was one of the co-founders of the artists' association "Der Ring" in 1918; he met Matthias Rey and Margarete Pausinger. From 1919 to 1921, Hofmann returned to Dresden. In 1922, he was involved in the re-founding of the MAERZ artists' association in Linz. Following the early death of his younger brother Adolf in 1934, he was given the management of his father's business. In later years, he devoted himself more intensively to painting. In 1952, MAERZ was re-founded, again under Hofmann's leadership. In addition to oil paintings, the artist created pastel drawings and prints (drypoint etchings and woodcuts). Mountains and natural landscapes are often the subjects of his work. His paintings are spontaneous impressions of nature. Hofmann was honored in 2020 with a comprehensive solo exhibition at the Nordico in Linz. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions both at home and abroad. His works are included in the following collections: Kupferstichkabinett Dresden, Albertina Vienna, Upper Austrian State Museum, Neue Galerie Linz, and Galerie Lehner, Vienna. Honors: Egon Hofmann Scholarship for stays abroad from the State of Upper Austria, Egon Hofmann House in Linz. Further artists and styles: Oil painting, Graphic art, Landscape, Veduta, Mountains, Mountains
