Willow Auction House's Fall Great Estates Curated Auction features nearly 200 lots of first edition books, furniture, artwork and ethnographic items.


The sale features a large selection of books from a private New York City collector, including first editions and publications in their original serialized parts by George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Charlotte Bronte, H.G. Wells, William Makepeace Thackeray and Charles Dickens.


Also up for auction is a variety of mid-century modern, oak and English furniture, including pieces by Tommi Parzinger, Paul Evans, Eames and Harvey Probber.


The sale also includes a large selection of artwork, including paintings by William Merritt Chase, Hermann Herzog, David Burliuk and Alfred Kowalski, as well as an Andy Warhol Cow Screenprint on wallpaper, and a large Franz Bergman cold painted bronze.

Shirley, in 3 volumes. First edition, 1849. Publisher Smith, Elder and Co., 65 Cornhill, London; printed by Stewart and Murray, London. With 16 page advertisement catalog at rear of volume I. Hooper Bookshop labels to rear pastedowns. In red cloth and brown leather case. All with wear and scratches to boards and spines, bumped corners, spine frayed and torn volume I, cloth missing from spine volume III, shelf wear to all, foxing throughout all, bindings loose, notations in ink and pencil on endpapers, half title pages and title pages; case worn, leather cracked, missing back section. Provenance: Sotheby Parke Bernet, Madison Ave., New York, 1/26/1977; private collection, New York City; thence by descent.
The Professor. First Tauchnitz edition, 1857. Bernhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig. Front and back boards detached, corners bumped, wear to cover and spine, losses to leather on spine, front endpapers and title page partially detached from binding, notations in pencil back of title page, binding loose. Provenance: Falkner Greirson, Dublin, 11/30/1970; private collection, New York City; thence by descent.
