Emotional Letter from Rabbi Abba Grossbard - the Ponovezh Yeshivah's First Mashgiach - Urgent Help for Refugees from the Nazis in Samarkand. 1943
Emotional letter from Rabbi Abba Grossbard - request for assistance for refugees fleeing from the Nazis, presently residing in Samarkand. Elul, 1943.
In this letter, Rabbi Abba requests that Agudat Yisrael urgently send assistance to Rabbi Avraham David Lashitza, who, according to his testimony, "is one of the prominent lecturers of Lithuania, known among bnei Torah and in yeshivahs, who fled to Samarkand during the war.
R' Abba relates that he received a shocking letter from Rabbi Avraham. It tells of the desperate conditions he was experiencing, the escape from the Nazis, the passing of his father-in-law "also one of the leading rabbis of his area, " and now he is calling to "immediately see to his rescue, as his ability to suffer has reached its limit ..."
Rabbi Abba signs off "With hope that you fulfill this request from a person who has seen so much suffering, horror and fear, - positively, absolutely and satisfactorily."
