The renowned gaon Rabbi Nathan Amram [1791-1871] was the chief rabbi of Alexandria. His grandfather's grandfather was a cousin of the Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh, who ascended together with him from Morocco to the Land of Israel. Alongside his Torah wisdom, he was knowledgeable in many fields including medicine, and he would heal people free of charge. He was one of the leading emissaries of Safed and Hebron and spent many years travelling to European cities for the benefit of the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. Rabbi Nathan Amram authored dozens of works over his lifetime, works of halachah and of kabbalah, philosophical and medical works. His books include: Kinyan Peirot (Livorno, 1840) which deals with the laws of the Tishrei holidays and their prayers; Kinyan HaGuf (Livorno, 1868, two parts), which deals with the laws of Even HaEzer; Mishbetzot Zahav (Livorno, 1851), an anthology of responsa arranged according to the order of the Shulchan Aruch; Chagigat HaRegel (Salonika, 1853); Ilui Neshamot (Livorno, 1834); Kuntress Acharon (Livorno, 1868); Sefer HaRuchot (Salonika 1858) and others.
